Coverlicious Comparison: Love it or hate it with a PASSION?

Left: AU/UK/US   Right: Portugese

A recent comment entirely out of the blue brought this to my attention — a entirely different cover for Lauren Kate's Passion.

Love 'em or hate 'em, what initially drew me to the series was the utterly gorgeous cover of Fallen. I liked Torment less, and when Passion came out? It's fair to say I hate the AU/US/UK cover with a passion. The girl looks skeletal, her arms are creepily thin and oddly re-colored, and the funereal veil of hair complete with 1980's crimping (see the fully blown up version here for detail)? Make me shudder. And the dress! The lovely voluminous gowns from Fallen and Torment are absent, replaced with... well, you get the point.

I love the drama of the Portugese version —the passion. The feel evokes what I loved about the cover of Fallen, and the cover for Rapture.
My opinion's clear, but what about you? Let the cover wars begin:

The version you know, or the version that could have been?

  1. I definitely don't like passion but I don't know that I like this other cover either-is this book about vampires? Because she kind of looks like one. Maybe it would work better for me if I had read the books.

  2. I love both of these covers but I still prefer the original ones. Maybe it's just me but I like walking into a bookstore and immediately pointing out a series just by looking at its cover - especially ones that match the previous books in the series.

Plus I hate cover changes. I really do. Unless, of course, they are an improvement to the old ones but nonetheless I hate cover changes.

  3. I like the Portuguese cover better. I think that the US/UK/AUS cover looks a little strange because the girl's arms look like rubber. They just don't look normal. The girl in the Portuguese cover looks more real.

  4. The Portugese version definitely has more passion. The other girl is just.. standing there. The UK/US/AUS looks more like 'Depression'

  5. The Portuguese cover for sure!

  6. I'm not a fan of the books (tried Fallen but wasn't my thing) but every time I saw the books in stores I would swoon over them. So gorgeous! Yeah, Passion is the least favorite among them. I like the color scheme they have going on, rusty colored clouds contrasted nicely with the slowly lightening blue and that dash of red. But the girl was just so odd and looks SO PASSIVE instead of passionate. On the Portuguese cover - Not a fan of it... >.>

  7. Yes! Fallen's gorgeous cover was what drew me into the series too!

I hated Passion... with a passion lol! Worst book in the series I think. I hated the cover and the story was just blaaaah. I felt like it was such a filler story? But yeah the cover, bleugh, she looks like she's a corpse/ghost looking over her own grave or something.

Don't like the Portugese cover either :/ the woman is too old/mature/sensual/sexy to look like Luce in my opinion.

Fallen and Rapture are the most fitting I think. Especially Fallen! That was such a fitting Luce. Torment was ok but yeah Rapture I thought was meaningful too.

  8. I definitely prefer the Portugese version (I especially hate when the girls are photoshopped so they're scary-skinny!). It's so cool to see all the different covers from around the world. They're so different, depending on what's appealing in that particular culture

  9. Although I don't hate the UK/US/AU cover with a passion, I definitely prefer the cover that 'could have been'. It's actually quite interesting how different European covers sometimes are - I just came back from Spain and whilst in a bookshop over there I spotted several books with familiar titles but very different covers! :)

  10. I've always liked the cover for Passion and this is my first time seeing the Portugese version and I like it so main better than the first one. But I agree with the comment from Jaz, the Portugese cover girl looks way too mature to be Luce. But it's still the better cover

  11. I don't mind the cover of Passion, although it doesn't look as real as the others. I first saw it at a blogger event at a publishers, we got to see it first here int he UK, I believe, and most people's main problem was the girl's slight figure. I honestly didn't even noticed her figure, or think of it as odd or too much at all, simply because her figure is pretty much identical to my own. I get why people have a problem with it - it's not a healthy body image to have girls see and think they should have - but it's hard for me to have a "oh my god, that girl is FAR too skinny, and she looks awful and completely unattractive" reaction as I'd have to have the same opinion of myself. And I don't. And I'm not going to feel bad for that. But this is a discussion for my other blog, probably, not one to be having on a book blog post about covers! :)

I love the Portuguese cover if I don't think about the series. But when I do... I can't see Luce making that pose, nor looking as vampy (I don't mean vampire vampy, but the vampy style/look thingy). And she wouldn't be THAT far above those trees in the background on her own. Great cover, but not for the series. So I prefer Passion for the series. But I hate those clouds. And what is with the rose anyway?

  12. I hate the US Cover too...it looks more like the girl is mourning rather than in passion. :/ On the other hand, the Portuguese cover is PERFECT. I swear, sometimes, the international covers are the prettiest.

  13. Hate them both to be honest! I'm just really bored of this type of cover on YA books.

  14. The Portugese cover wins for me, though I suppose it isn't much of a contest! I really can't stand that US cover! She looks like a corpse... O_O I loved the first couple of covers for this series (how beautiful was Torment?!), though it's been a downhill journey since then, unfortunately.

  15. The Portuguese cover of course!! I'd never seen it before now or put much thought into the US cover, but I definitely like the Portuguese one more.

  16. I think they are both okay but neither are that great.

  17. Eh, I haven't read PASSION yet, and I don't intend to anytime soon, what with all the mixed and negative reviews. I have a feeling I just won't like it much. :/ I think both covers are pretty good, though I prefer the Portuguese one as well. More dramatic, and the model's expression is really good. Plus, that dress? GORGEOUS. If I had a dress like that...

(Ha, I agree - the model for the US cover doesn't look real at all. Kinda reminds me of the cover for Becca Fitzpatrick's FINALE. The models looked like they were made of porcelain!)

  18. meh, I don't really like either of these covers but I actually like the US one more than the Portuguese. the girl's expression in the Portugese cover reminds me of like, a telenova or something.

  19. I have not read this series - eek, don't kill me! - but I have to say I definitely prefer the Portugese cover! It's so much more enticing and really makes me intrigued. The UK/AUS/US one looks like the girl has or is giving up. If that makes sense!

Great post Sarah. <3 Sorry I've been LAME with commenting here lately. I STILL LOVE YOU ANYWAY.

  20. I dislike both the covers for this and I went and looked at the others and this just seems like a really strange transition. Fallen and Torment kind of suit each other, they click, and then comes this, which seems to be the odd one out alongside Fallen in Love (not sure if that's a novella or what, but I'm letting it fly) and then Rapture sort of brings it back to how the first two books were, but it's still a pretty vast range of cover differences and I don't like it much. Awesome post, Sarah- talking about covers is fun, if confusing when the series is large!

  21. You are SO right on this one (when are you not...). The original cover for Passion just creeps me out, I am not feeling it! Like you said, the arms are so skeletal and discoloured and then what are those clouds supposed to be? Granted, I haven't read the book so maybe they travel to the desert and that's like a dust cloud but IF NOT...

That said, I don't LOVE the Portugese cover. She looks distinctly vampire-like to me which may or may not have been the intention but I agree that it's quite a few steps up on the passion scale.

  22. Fallen cover was awesome, I don't like either of these to be honest. Scary skinny and melodramatic lol ... IMHO they could have done better :)

  23. I don't know that I like either cover... but I really don't like the US version.

I actually dislike all of Lauren Kate's American covers....the girls look like poorly drawn waifs with awkward shoulders that are too narrow for their bodies. Maybe I'm being picky. So my preference has always been the international versions :)

  25. I personally agree with you. The other cover certainly suits the title better, and catches the eye a bit more.
